Our landfill sites are filling up rapidly
and there is a desparate need to rethink the amount of waste we produce.
The UK produces 400 million tonnes of waste annually, polluting and destroying
our environment... but it doesn't have to be this way. If we work on the
three Rs principle - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle we can limit the amount
of waste going to landfill. In Melksham we have good recycling opportunities
with fortnightly collections from our door step, a number of local recycling
sites and the Hills recycling centre. However, it could be better. There
is no collection of plastic or cardboard at the kerbside and we have to
take these things to a recycling site usually by car but some of us may
not be able to do this. When we take plastic the recycling centres we find
that not all types are recylced and much of it is destined for the landfill
sites. MCFG would like these issues addressed. MCFG supports
Melksham Freecycle where you can give away, rather than throw away, the
things you no longer use. Visit the freecycle
website. Why not try composting? There are very good offers for Food
Waste Digesters on the Recycle
for Wiltshire web site.
